The progress made by each member body can be read below:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Breed Health Co-ordinators (BHCs)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BHCs have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Met with the KC to discuss possible changes to the breed standards for brachycephalic breeds.<\/li>\n<li>Contributed to the development of brachycephalic health schemes (along with the BVA, the KC and the University of Cambridge).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>BSAVA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BSAVA has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Contributed to and supported many of BVA\u2019s activities including: The development of \u2018Guidelines for the Responsible Use of Pet Animals in Advertising\u2019 and <span style=\"font-size: revert;\">The Position paper on Extreme Conformation across species.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Continued to regularly circulate articles or information related to the work of BWG via\u00a0<i>BSAVA News<\/i> to all members (&gt;10,000 vets).<\/li>\n<li>Actively been involved in many of the activities of the Canine Feline Sector Group (CFSG) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cfsg.org.uk\/_layouts\/15\/start.aspx#\/SitePages\/Home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">http:\/\/www.cfsg.org.uk\/_layouts\/15\/start.aspx#\/SitePages\/Home.aspx<\/a>\u00a0which seeks to improve the health and welfare of dogs and cats by working in partnership with MPs, government, NGOs, leading charities and a broad spectrum of companion animal stakeholders.<\/li>\n<li>Published an article in BSAVA\u2019s internal monthly publication covering scientific aspects and management of\u00a0brachycephalic\u00a0health and welfare problems.<\/li>\n<li>Provided CPD for vets on\u00a0brachycephalic breeds through a dedicated stream featured at BSAVA congress.<\/li>\n<li>Featured a session on the puppy trade at the 2018 BSAVA congress, in particular of relevance to brachycephalic breeds.<\/li>\n<li>Liaised with RCVS to ensure clarity on the desired veterinary approach when dealing with potential, new or existing\u00a0brachycephalic-owning clients.<\/li>\n<li>Contributed to the FVE Consultation on \u2018Breeding Healthy Dogs\u2019 \u2013 covers FVE policy, recommendations and actions regarding supply and demand of\u00a0brachycephalic\u00a0breeds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>BVA\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since the release of the #BreedtoBreathe campaign the BVA has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bva.co.uk\/workplace-guidance\/ethical-guidance\/advertising-guidelines\/\">Developed a good practice guide for the responsible use of pet animals in advertising<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bva.co.uk\/News-campaigns-and-policy\/Policy\/ethics-and-welfare\/animal-welfare\/#extremeconformation\">Developed a position on extreme conformation across species,<\/a>\u00a0setting out how the veterinary profession and key stakeholders can work together to ensure healthier future generations of animals.<\/li>\n<li>Published several blogs:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bva.co.uk\/news-campaigns-and-policy\/bva-community\/bva-blog\/breeding-change-%E2%80%93-vets-and-vet-nurses-tackling-root-cause-animal-welfare-problems\/\">Breeding change &#8211; vets and vet nurses tackling root cause animal welfare problems<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bva.co.uk\/news-campaigns-and-policy\/bva-community\/bva-blog\/extreme-conformation---how-vets-can-play-their-part\/\">Extreme conformation \u2013 how vets can play their part<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dogs Trust<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dogs Trust have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Met with vets attending Crufts 2018 for updates on the current vet-check systems in place.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PDSA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The PDSA has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Formed a strategy to mitigate the harms from Disney&#8217;s Patrick the Pug movie.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Royal Veterinary College<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The RVC has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"x_MsoListParagraph\">The RVC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rvc.ac.uk\/vetcompass\">VetCompass Programme<\/a> continues to explore an extensive programme of research on brachycephalic health with many papers already published on topics related to brachycephalic issues.<\/li>\n<li>Formed a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rvc.ac.uk\/research\/brachycephalic-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">Brachycephalic Research Team<\/a>\u00a0that has a vision to reduce the negative welfare impacts of brachycephalism on companion animals through world-leading research and education.<\/li>\n<li>Worked\u00a0in collaboration with the University of Cambridge to review the breed standards and points of concern for brachycephalic breeds and made recommendations.<\/li>\n<li>Published an open letter in the Veterinary Record,\u00a0released to the wider media, urging marketing bodies not to use brachycephalic breeds in their campaigns.<\/li>\n<li>Continued to publish evidence on brachycephalic health.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>RSPCA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The RSPCA has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Met with vets attending Crufts 2018 for updates on the current vet-check systems in place.<\/li>\n<li>Continued to develop a Puppy Contract to encourage those buying and breeding puppies to do so responsibly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Kennel Club <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Kennel Club (KC) continues to develop Breed Health and Conservation Plans (BHCPs) for brachycephalic breeds, which ensure that all health concerns are identified through evidence-based criteria, and that breeders are provided with useful information and resources to support them in making balanced breeding decisions that make health a priority. By the end of November 2018, 40 breeds will have a BHCP document.<\/p>\n<p><strong>University of Cambridge<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The University of Cambridge has:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Released a vital scheme, funded by The Kennel Club Charitable Trust, to improve health of Pugs, French Bulldogs and Bulldogs.<\/li>\n<li>Worked in collaboration with the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) to review the breed standards and points of concern for brachycephalic breeds and made recommendations.<\/li>\n<li>Met with vets attending Crufts 2018 for updates on the current vet-check systems in place.<\/li>\n<li>Continued to publish evidence on brachycephalic health.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The BWG recognises that there are many different stakeholders in relation to the brachycephalic dog issue in the UK and will harness the different opportunities that various members within the group have to influence these goals.
